I sit on the edge of my bed, looking into the darkness that is the floor. So dark. So cold. Entranced, gazing into its nothingness, the pale wood planks beneath me slowly curl into one another like the consuming fury of a whirlpool. The trance was abruptly ended by a sharp pain in my face, lying face down on the floor, nose streaming crimson. Rolling onto my back I open my eyes wide, returning focus to them. Blinking away the darkness I sit up, bringing my hand to my face, obstructing the blood flow. "Shit." The word softly escaped my mouth as I closed my eyes. Slowly reclaiming my equilibrium, I come to my feet, shaking the experience. Pulling my hand away from my face, I vigorously rub my hand on my shoulder, atteptimg to remove the crimson. Three loud strikes came at the door, drawing my attention from my shoulder, making me wince. Curious I walk towards the door. Opening the door I catch sight of Bill, the landlord, walking out of the building, hammer hanging loosely in his hand. A red sheet of paper was hanging from the top of of the door by a single nail. " Notice of Eviction " My visage twists in confusion, my lips quivering as if trying to speak silent words, turning to look to Bill's back. Grasping the paper, I tear it from it's resting place, sprinting to him. Reaching him i pull back on his shoulder, confusion shifting to anger. " The hell is this? " I queried. He gruffly turned as he spoke, " I've sold the complex to be made into a parking lot, and you have 10 days to remove yourself. " With that he turned back and passed through the front door. I stared at him blankly as he exited the building, a slight breeze pushing through as the door closed. A soft click came from behind me, turning to see my door closed. " Bloody great. " was all that I could come to say.
Sitting on the steps of the complex i hold my head in my hands, staring loosely at the sidewalk. " Bloody mondays. " I said, raising my head up to gaze at the street. A tow truck pulled away as i looked up, my car on it's back. Standing up to shout to the driver, a brick in the steps came loose, spilling my body to the sidewalk. Sighing i rolled to my back again, not caring about the blood flowing from my nose. Grunting, I came to lean up, staring blankly into the street. People passing by kept a small distance away, staring at me as they passed. Rising to my feet, I pick up a stone from the walk and turn to the complex. Squeezing the stone, i turn to follow the path of the sidewalk. Slowly walking the path, my socks blackening more and more with every step, my feet twitched now and again from the jagged stones that were randomly strewn about the path. Dusk had started to settle in, the city air turning frigid and still. My face, now sticky from the now stopped bleeding, was becoming numb in the night air. Treking further uptown, two men stepped out of an alley a block ahead of me. I reached into my pocket and the smaller of the two took a knife from his jacket, opening it and looking to me. I pulled out my wallet and tossed it to them, keeping my pace, meaning to pass between them. Picking up my wallet they returned a confused look and watched me pass through them. Fifteen or twenty minutes later I arrived at Sam's apartment building, hoping they still had the spare key to my place.
I looked up to the second floor of thier complex, to find unlit windows. As I began to walk to the door, small flurries started to fall from above, almost making the world seem tranquil around me. Tugging at the door's handle i discovered the door was indeed locked. Leering, I turn looking for the call box, finding there is none. Becoming ever more irritated I look down to my hand, blood trickling down to the walk from it. I had forgotten about the stone I had been gripping so tightly the whole time. Opening my hand I looked into palm, flesh torn from the jagged rock, palm quivering slightly. Stepping back and looking to Sam's window again, I squeeze the stone tightly, winding back my arm. " Be home damnit. " I said in a grunt as my arm uncoiled and the stone came forth, pitching itself toward the window. Crash. Shards of glass came down with the flakes of snow, surrounding the walk beneath it. Mere seconds after the window was torn asunder, Sam's head emerged from where it once was. " The hell are you on then ?! " They shouted, face twisted in rage. " I need the spare key to my apartment, if you still have it that is. " I shouted up to Sam. They looked down to me, dumbstruck, choking back words, and then disappeared from the window. " I really need them. " I shouted again. Sam hurled the key from the window yelling, " Shove off you wanker. " The key struck hard against the street, bouncing from it back into the air. And again. And landing onto a sewer grate, very lightly supported by a thin cross beam, swaying on its edge. I dove for the grate, reaching out for the key, watching it topple down into the darkness. " Thank you much, Sam. " I shouted, laying on the walk, hands over the grate. " Bloody thanks. " Quickly making my way back to my feet, I stuff my hand into my trouser pocket, cold setting into the wounds. With a sigh I set back for the walk home. The snow was coming down harder now, covering cars parked by the walk in a blanket of white, dancing in front of me as I walked against the wind. Thats when I remembered what I had begun to do prior to the interuption by Bill. I was making dinner. Ramen. " Bloody, ... Fuck. " I swore as my walk became a sprint back home. Minutes later I came upon my building, up in blaze, as if Hell itself had opened up all at once.
My eyes grew wide as they gazed in horror at the complex. Collapsing to my knees, the sounds of sirens and high strung engines called out from behind. Moments later the local fire department had arrived, errupting to the scene with what felt like chaos. Chaos. Thats when it finally came to me, everything was its own chaos. Chaos was order, and order everything inbetween. Life born, to feed on life, feeding on life, to die and feed rebirth. My complex burning was a sign of rebirth. Standing to my feet again I began to contemplate all the things that had just arisen. Wide eyed I walked past my complex, gazing at the walk with a new perspective, mumbling things to myself. Over and over again these things played through in my mind, tempting me to fully understand, as if sent by some higher power. Before long I looked up from the walk and noticed I had wondered into a part of the city i've never come to before. Things were very different here. The sun began to creep over the streets, pushing away the white blankets the covered over the city. Windows opened, doors were open. Children came out, waiting on the walk smiling, waiting for thier daily commute to school. Such things made me feel uncomfortable. Is my home so cold? Further and further I walked, past towering city building, townhouses, shops, reaching outside of the city to an adjacent town. This place was even more strange, the very air seemed charged with " comfort ". Walking on I began again to contemplate that of life, order, chaos, and my place in everything. Hours passed as I walked, the sun had towered overhead, and passed to greet the far side of the sky. Houses here were far apart, grass grew between them. Children were about playing in the streets and rolling through the grass, Homes open and inviting. Chaos ...
As if from nowhere a wave of tiredness struck me. I pushed forward until I came to a park, and nestled down onto a bench, curling into myself for warmth. Sleep came easy that night. I awoke to peering sunlight, and a discomfort to my back. Turning I met gaze with a police officer, prodding me in the back with a night stick. " Wake up boy, i'll take you down to the center, no worries. " he said gruffly. He outreached a hand, which I took cautiously, and I rose from the bench to follow him. He led me to the back of his patrolcar and he shut the door, climbing into the front himself. He looked into the rearview mirror as he spoke, looking to my eyes, " Not to often we get your kind come wander down this far. " After a few minutes the light that had been this new place I had come to started to dim, and slowly the scenery around me began to dim, becoming more and more familiar. Only minutes later we had come a few blocks from my old home, as the car came to a stop and the officer exited the car. Opening my door he said, " Here you are boy, off with you. " Slightly confused I said, " What center is this? " Before I could utter another word i had been struck across the face with the stick, and drug from the backseat, " Best to stay in your own filth lad. " he spat as he dropped me onto the walk. Seconds later the car had put distance between itself and me, leaving me bleeding on the walk again. Rolling to my back I looked to the sky and cursed the day. Was this part of the cycle? Was I to die and be born anew to feed off that which feeds off of life? Chaos is order. Chaos. I am chaos. As I thought to myself a wicked grin crossed my lips, fingers tearing into my palms.
As I dug my nails into my palm, a sense of tranquility surged through me. I felt a warmth in the cold night, and a soft glow arise in the distance, slowly approaching. It was a young girl, four feet tall at most, pale white skin, and no face. She walked to me and outstreched her tiny hand, " Come friend, theres no pain this way. " she said. Remebering what had happened the last time I had taken an offered hand, I refused it, only showing confusion to her. A sad look came across her face, frowning as she turned her back, looking to me over her shoulder. With a soft giggle she began to skip away, leaving a disturbing tune in her wake. Over the next few minutes laying on the walk, I tried to ignore and forget about her, but the tune had become louder and louder in the back of my skull. When the music became unbearable I arose, set out to find the child, having hopes of once again returning to peace. Looking down to my hands again I am amazed to see my wounds don't exist as they once were, now there was streaks of light pulsing from where they used to be. So tranquil. So beautiful. The warm feeling drove me closer to the sounds of the wretched music, making me feel more secure with each moving step. " Here I come lovie, I do so hope you have reason to bring me out. " I whispered looking away from my brilliant palms, out toward the pillar of light that had began to rise in the distance.
Block after block I walked, never quite making progress to become closer to the light. The feeling of warmth came and went, and the light dimmed and brightend now and again, the only constant was that dreadful music piercing further and further into my mind. " So close, so close ... ", a soft voice had mummered, almost the same as that of the child. A hard chill went down my spine, and I blinked hard. She was there in front of me, as if she always had been there. A stream of crimson ran down her cheek from where her eye should have been, and the chill shook me down to the soul. Deep black orbs pulsed from her featureless face, giving off an immense sense of sadness. " Follow my ways, I can show you the way of no pain. I can show you a way of no sorrow. I can show you power. There are those who have wronged you. There are those who will wrong you. There are those who wish to wrong you. Take my hand, I can lead the way. I am ever here to aid you. ", the voice was soft and calm in the back of my mind. The girls head cocked to the side, the black orbs of her eyes narrowing as if they were to pierce my will. Nervously I looked about me, to find that the sight of this child would disturb the passerbys as well, but no. Everyone walked by, staying a distance from the two of us. " Take my hand and you may rest. ", the voice came again, slightly louder, and more demanding. The narrow slits that were her eyes opened wide again, and the other eye leaked tears of blood as well, " FOLLOW ME AND ALL WILL BE WELL ", the words rang out loudly, robbing me of my equilibrium. Her brow furrowed as a piercing scream bellowed out of her non mouth, striking me in the heart, pulling me down to the ground. Her face spiraled into oblivion as the world around me went dark.
I awoke later that day in the hospital, laying on a bed, wounds all tightly bound up. As I came to a passing nurse noticed and rushed to me, " You musn't move dear, your badly hurt and the gashes could open themselves again. ", she said quickly, placing a cold hand on my chest as if trying to soothe me. " I'll go let the doctor know you've awoke dear, hold tight now. ", she said just as quickly as she raced from the bed, exiting the dimly lit room. My head pounded as I tried to recollect how I had come to be in this bed. I stared into the darkness of the rooms corners a long moment, until the sound of hastend footsteps sounded from outside the room. Very shortly after a tall man in a long coat entered with a clipboard and a very gruff expression. " So lad, how did you come to get in a condidtion like that eh? ", he asked. Just as the last of the words had exited his lips, his hair grew long and face sunk into itself, becoming featureless. " There are those that would mean to wrong you. To hurt you. ", the voice rang out in my head again, and just as quickly, his face was itself again. My eyes widened in horror as my body arched itself away from him. He took a step back and with a bewildered look took the clipboard to his chest, as if it would bring him some false sense of comfort. I leapt up onto the bed, narrowing my eyes looking hard at him, bending down low and gripping the edge of the bed. His face shifted again, this time it was exactly that of the child from before, with a deep cast of hatred in her eyes, " There is no fear here, there is no pain. Come. Leave all of this BEHIND ", her dark visage bellowed out. My lips curled into a feral snarl as I lunged through the air hands outstreched to her throat. The impact knocked her to the floor, a sicking snap sounded off as her head connected with the hard tiled floor. Harder and harder I gripped her throat, digging my fingers into the flesh. Her body went limp as I dug my hands through her throat. " So close, so close. ", she sang out, though her voice was distant now. Her pale face slowly faded away leaving only that of the doctors still lifeless body on the floor. The warmth had returned. I looked down to my crimson hands and hastily came off of the doctors chest. Horror struck me as I had come to realize what I had done. Quickly I wiped my hands on the sheets of the bed, tearing them from thier place, then tossing them onto the body of the late doctor.
I ran blindly out of the room, crashing through the hallways of the hospital, desprately seeking a passage out. I stuffed my hands underneath my arms, crossed over my chest, trying to hide the dried blood on my hands. The hospital was a veritable labrinyth, twisting side to side, hallways all seeming to lead into one another. " Follow my path, I will guide you. ", the voice whispered to me as I ran aimlessly through the spiraling corridors. The song that I had heard last night had returned, so softly it played that it was almost unnoticable. As best I could I ran to the horrific dirge, leading me through the hospital like a lost child. Moments later I had come upon the door to the place, cracking a sadistic grin, sprinting toward it. The gaurd at the security station stood from his post and ran to intercept me at the door. I stopped for a brief moment as he reached the door, I crouched down and growled softly. He reached for his pistol and I leapt into his chest, knocking him off of his feet onto the tiled floor. Another sickening snap sounded out, erupting a small pool of blood from the back of his head as it connected hard to the floor. From his chest I leapt to the door, knocking it open and ripping it from the hinges, toppling an elderly couple as I past by. I ran as fast as I could for as far as I could. Very winded I snapped from the trance, coughing up a putrid fluid from within myself. I dropped to my knees holding my crimson hands to my mouth. The voice came again, " So close, so close. " I shook my head violently, trying to free from it the voice and the vision of the girl. " There are those that wish to do harm to you, I shall be your guide. Take my hand, Follow me. ", the voice sounded calm and soft again, almost welcome in the back of my mind. With another blink she was again right before me, though this time she had a face, a face without eyes. Deep gouges crossed where her eyes would be, leaving only scars and scabs oozing with pus. " Take my hand, I shall guide you. ", she beckoned. I reached out my hand, almost touching hers, when her face pulsed out only for a brief second. It was my visage behind hers. Her face returned and I pulled my hand back. She reeled back opening her mouth wide, and let loose the highest pitched screech i've ever heard, then just as quickly, leaned forward. Her body spasmed violently for a moment, mouth open wide, begining to foam. " Take my hand.", she beckoned, her form back as to what it was. My eyes widened in terror as I watched my hand creep out toward hers, trying to pull my hand away. I shouted at the top of my lungs and her head cocked back. A long slit opened up in her throat and one in each wrist, ichor spraying wildly from them. Just as quickly as she had come, she once again disappeared.
Regaining my senses, I ran as fast as I could, passing through my old neighborhood, past Sam's place, past the small town I had come upon days before. The air grew thinner and thinner, and the sky fell into darkness. The ground itself seemed to reach up and stop me from moving. The walk took hold of my feet as I came crashing down to the ground, landing on my jaw, blurring my vision and sounding off a horrid cracking sound. Trying to get back to my feet I gazed up the walk to see her again. My broken jaw quivered in fear and pain as I turned away from her to run the other way. She was behind me, looking deep into my eyes. My hands were slowly reaching out to hers again. Every fiber of my being fought it, closer and closer my hands came to her. She smiled wide, as a long gash came across her eyes, bleeding profusely as the soft gelatin was pierced. I choked, too terrified to scream, trying all I could to pull myself away from her. Her hands withered down to bone and rancid flesh, slowly creeping up her arms, spreading through her entire body. My eyes shut hard and I regained control of myself, narrowly stopping myself from contact again, falling backwards hard. She controlled me through my eyes? My body went cold and my body shook with terror. I reached my hands upto my face, digging my nails into the soft flesh of my cheeks. I raked my hands across my face, scratching my eyes deep, warm fliud poured from them and my stomach turned hard. Again and again I clawed at my face. Now I was free. A grin crossed my pained face as I started to run again, full sprint with arms out wide, strength fading. Moments after a very blunt pain came across my entire body, and the warmth returned, making me feel tranquil once again. Though I could not see it, I felt bursting pulses of light all around me, then all was still.
